See you at Lambeth?

Next year's Lambeth Conference takes place from 20th July to 3rd August. There is to be a ‘marketplace' and the MCU has booked a stall. This will be an opportunity to hand out literature, talk to bishops from all over the Anglican world and commend our approach to Christian theology.

Lambeth conferences have been taking place every ten years for over a hundred years. Constitutionally they do not have any authority to make legislation which is binding on the provinces, though the current proposals to change the Anglican Communion include the prospect of increasing their powers; and a resolution on homosexuality by the last conference, in 1998, has been widely cited (even by the Windsor Report) as though it established the Communion's view on the matter.

Next year's conference has been hotly debated not only because more resolutions could divide Anglicanism still further, but also because in the current climate many bishops have indicated that they may refuse to attend if other bishops, of whom they disapprove, do attend.

The marketplace is open from Monday to Saturday on both weeks. We shall need volunteers to look after it. Can you help? We would also appreciate advice and suggestions about how to make the most of this opportunity.
